Meibomian glands are tiny glands found along the edges of your eyelids. These glands secrete the oil that makes up the lipid layer of your tear film, responsible for preventing your tears from evaporating too quickly. When the meibomian glands become clogged, you can experience meibomian gland dysfunction, but the good news is this condition is treatable.

Meibomian gland dysfunction can be caused by a number of factors, including:

High cholesterol
Bacterial infection
Autoimmune disorders such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or rosacea

TearCare is a treatment for patients experiencing dry eyes due to meibomian gland dysfunction. This system uses wearable eyewear technology that applies heat to the eyelids. The heat helps to melt the thick oil blocking the meibomian glands.

After 15 minutes of wear, Dr. Doud will manually clear the melted oil from the glands. Once cleared, adequate levels of oil can return to your tear film.
